In response to Zohran Mamdani winning the 2025 NYC mayoral election, Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) released the following statement from CPR spokesperson Sala Cyril, lead organizer with the Malcom X Grassroots Movement:
“As New York City enters a new chapter of leadership, Communities United for Police Reform urges the next administration to prioritize the safety, dignity, and rights of all New Yorkers. We call on the mayor to take bold action to end discriminatory and abusive policing practices, ensure transparency and accountability within the NYPD, and invest in real solutions that make our communities thrive — including housing, healthcare, education, and mental health care. Public safety cannot be achieved through over-policing or surveillance; it must be built through care, trust, and community power. We look forward to working with Mayor-elect Mamdani to advance real safety for all New Yorkers.”
About Communities United for Police Reform
Communities United for Police Reform (CPR) is an unprecedented campaign to end discriminatory policing practices in New York, and to build a lasting movement that promotes public safety and reduces reliance on policing. CPR runs coalitions of over 200 local, statewide and national organizations, bringing together a movement of community members, lawyers, researchers and activists to work for change. The partners in this campaign come from all 5 boroughs, from all walks of life and represent many of those most unfairly targeted by the NYPD.
