CPR Statement Re: Police Commissioner Bratton’s Comments on Stop-and-Frisk

In response to reports of Police Commissioner Bill Bratton’s comments on stop-and-frisk that “the problem has been more or less solved,” Communities United for Police Reform released the following statement from spokesperson Priscilla Gonzalez.

“While it is a positive step that the outrageously high numbers of stops by the NYPD – driven by quotas and discriminatory profiling – seem to be on the decline, reining in illegal, discriminatory stops is not simply a numbers game. The remnants of the Bloomberg administration's out-of-control stop-and-frisk program will not be resolved until unconstitutional stops are eliminated as policy and in practice. Institutional change does not come overnight, and it remains critical that the law prohibiting all discriminatory profiling by the police be upheld and properly implemented, and the remedial process resulting from the federal court decision move forward. We will continue to work to ensure that we reach a day where New Yorkers are not stopped or profiled based simply on factors like race, sexual orientation, religion, or housing status.”
